The ceremony is the heartbeat of a wedding, and as a Rockhampton wedding photographer, my goal is always to capture the raw, honest emotions that happen in those moments. To do that, having a celebrant who makes a couple feel at ease is everything. Here I have asked her some questions to help you get to know one of the best in the business: Serena from Ceremonies by Serena. We sat down to chat about her process, her inspiration, and how she helps Central Queensland couples create a ceremony that is truly unforgettable.

Meet one of our most well loved Rockhampton Celebrants – Ceremonies by Serena
How did you become a marriage celebrant? What led you to this role?
Years ago, someone unexpectedly suggested I would make a great marriage celebrant, though I can’t for the life of me remember who! Then, when one of my daughter’s best friends and their partner visited and announced they were getting married. I was so thrilled for them and I shared that story, mentioning how someone had told me I’d be a great celebrant. Their response was, “If you were a marriage celebrant, we’d definitely choose you!” That encouragement inspired me to find out what it takes to become a celebrant. It was a lot of work, but about two years later, I proudly became fully registered and ready to officiate weddings.
How long have you been officiating weddings?
11 September 2021 was my very first wedding.
What types of weddings do you most enjoy officiating (e.g., traditional, non-traditional, intimate, themed)?
I most enjoy officiating weddings that feel like a true reflection of the couple, whatever shape that takes. Romantic elopements, with their quiet intimacy and deep emotion, are always a joy to be part of. There’s something incredibly special about being one of just a few witnesses to such a powerful moment. At the same time, I love the energy and grandeur of an extravagant celebration, the kind where love takes centre stage amidst elegant styling and all the beauty and festivity. I genuinely enjoy them all. Intimate ceremonies with close family and friends, non-traditional weddings full of personality, themed celebrations that break all the rules. For me, it’s not about the size or the style. It’s about the connection, the story, and helping couples bring it all to life in a way that feels authentic, personal, and unforgettable for them.

How do you personalize the ceremony for each couple?
Personalising a ceremony begins with getting to know the couple, who they are individually, how they fell in love, and what truly matters to them. I take the time to ask meaningful questions, listen to their stories, and understand the vibe they want for their day, whether it’s heartfelt and romantic, relaxed and light-hearted, or somewhere beautiful in between. From there, I craft a ceremony that reflects their unique journey. I weave in their words, their humour and their values. If they want to include personal vows, special readings, cultural traditions, or symbolic rituals, I help guide and shape those elements so everything flows seamlessly and feels true to them. The goal is always to create a ceremony that feels like them, not just a script, but a moment that’s authentic, emotional, and unforgettable. Something they’ll look back on and say, “That was so us.”
Can couples include specific readings, rituals, or traditions in the ceremony?
Absolutely, as answered above.
How do you work with couples to create vows that feel authentic to them?
I guide couples through the vow-writing process by offering prompts, examples, and gentle support to help them find words that feel natural and true to their relationship. Whether they want to write their own, mix in tradition, or keep it simple, I help make sure their vows feel authentic, meaningful, and who they are.
Do you have any creative ideas or suggestions for making the ceremony feel unique and special?
Definitely! I love suggesting personal touches that make the ceremony feel truly special, like writing personal vows to each other, or secret letters to exchange before the ceremony, incorporating a meaningful ritual, involving loved ones in creative ways, or telling your love story in a way that reflects their personalities. Even small, thoughtful details can make the moment feel unforgettable and uniquely theirs.

How do you work with other vendors (e.g., photographers, planners, musicians) to ensure everything runs smoothly?
I work closely with photographers, planners, and musicians to make sure we’re all in sync, from timing to key moments. Clear communication and teamwork help everything flow smoothly so the couple can simply enjoy their day.
How many meetings do you generally have with couples before the wedding day?
I usually have two to three meetings with couples before the wedding day. This gives us time to get to know each other, go over the ceremony details, personalise the script, and make sure everything feels just right. I’m happy to meet more or less often depending on what the couple needs.
What is your process for handling legal paperwork and requirements?
As a registered marriage celebrant in Australia, I guide couples through the legal requirements from start to finish. This includes explaining the Notice of Intended Marriage form, ensuring it’s lodged at least one month before the ceremony (or waiving this period if eligible), and confirming all paperwork is correctly completed and signed on the day. After the ceremony, I submit the signed documents to the Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages promptly to make the marriage official. I’m always available to answer any questions about the legal process to make it as smooth and stress-free as possible.

How would you describe your style as a celebrant – calm, energetic, humorous, formal?
I’d describe my style as warm and adaptable. I aim to create a calm and welcoming atmosphere while bringing just the right amount of energy and lightness to keep everyone engaged. Depending on the couple’s vibe, I can be heartfelt and sincere, sprinkle in some humour, or keep things more formal and traditional, always tailoring my approach to fit their unique story and personality.
Do you have any recommendations or tips for preparing for a wedding ceremony?
My top tips are to reflect on what matters most, practice your vows, and communicate openly. Trust the process and lean on your support team to keep the day joyful and stress-free.
