How did you become a marriage celebrant? What led you to this role?
Heather: Becoming a marriage celebrant was a natural progression for me. I’ve always loved being part of meaningful moments and I value connection and storytelling. My journey was actually inspired by my mum – she was a celebrant herself, and I saw firsthand how special it was to play such an important part in a couple’s love story. With her encouragement, I decided to follow in her footsteps. It felt like a very natural fit, and friends who knew my personality said, “You’d be perfect for this!” They were right. I haven’t looked back since.
How long have you been officiating weddings?
Heather: Four years, but the seed was there for many years.
What types of weddings do you most enjoy officiating?
Heather: Honestly, I love them all! Every wedding is unique. Whether it’s a traditional ceremony, a small and intimate elopement, a laid-back beach wedding, or a full-blown themed celebration – I genuinely enjoy being part of each one. What matters most to me is that the ceremony reflects the couple.
How do you personalize the ceremony for each couple?
Heather: Personalising a ceremony starts with getting to know the couple – their story, their values, and their style. I spend time talking with them and really listening to how they see their relationship. From there, I craft a ceremony that reflects their unique journey, whether that’s including personal vows, stories about how they met, or special family traditions. No two couples are the same, so no two ceremonies should be either.

Can couples include specific readings, rituals, or traditions in the ceremony?
Heather: Absolutely – they’re encouraged to! I love when couples bring their own readings or cultural traditions into the ceremony. Whether it’s a favourite poem, a unity ritual like candle lighting or handfasting, or involving family and friends in a special way – there’s plenty of room to make the ceremony truly your own.
How do you work with couples to create vows that feel authentic to them?
Heather: Vows are a powerful part of the ceremony. I provide guidance, examples, and gentle prompts to help couples reflect on what they value in each other. There’s no one-size-fits-all approach. Some choose heartfelt and poetic, others go for light and humorous – and both are perfect if they feel true to who you are.
Do you have any creative ideas or suggestions for making the ceremony feel unique and special?
Heather: Definitely! You might involve loved ones by having a friend play live music or including your children or pets. Symbolic rituals are another beautiful option – like a wine box love letter ceremony or sand blending. I’ve even seen couples have a first dance mid-ceremony! The possibilities are endless.
How does wedding celebrant Heather Sanders work with other vendors (e.g., photographers, planners, musicians) to ensure everything runs smoothly?
Heather: Teamwork is key. I always make a point of connecting with other vendors before and on the day of the wedding. I arrive early to ensure everyone is on the same page, from checking cues with musicians to coordinating timing with the photographer. When vendors work together, the couple gets a calm, coordinated, and stress-free experience.
How many meetings do you generally have with couples before the wedding day?
Heather: As many as they need and at least two.
What is your process for handling legal paperwork and requirements?
Heather: I handle the legal side so you can focus on celebrating. I guide you through the Notice of Intended Marriage (NOIM), ensure all identification is in order, and prepare the Official Marriage Certificates for signing. After the ceremony, I lodge everything with the Births, Deaths and Marriages registry on your behalf and guide you through applying for your official certificate.
How would you describe your style as a wedding celebrant?
Heather: Calm, energetic, humorous, or formal – I am all of the above and in the right context!
Do you have any recommendations or tips for preparing for a wedding ceremony?
Heather: There is so much that can be said, it’s not a one size fits all, and most importantly… have the wedding of your dreams, not someone else’s!
