Q&A Insights into Carolynn Farmer

Read the full conversation below to discover how she can personalize your upcoming marriage ceremony!

Q. How did you become a marriage celebrant? What led you to this role?

A. When I attended our Godson’s wedding, I thought being a celebrant would be a wonderful profession to take up. After speaking with a celebrant, the celebrant suggested as I had a caring personality, concern, could assist people and communication with adults and children that I would be suitable for this profession, so I applied and was accepted. I have now officiated over 600 ceremonies and am a fulltime celebrant.

Q. How long have you been officiating weddings?

A. Registered 2007 and fulltime celebrant. Can officiate every day of the year.

Q. What types of weddings do you most enjoy officiating (e.g., traditional, non-traditional, intimate, themed)?

A. Traditional, Elopements, Same Gender, Chapel, Intimate and Themed. Renewal of Vows and baby Name Giving days. They are all special and enjoyable. I have samples and ideas to share.

Q. How do you personalize the ceremony for each couple?

A. I include the couple’s ideas when writing their own vows. I have responsibility to check vows as they include legal requirement, personal paragraphs on how they met and what has happened since, poems written for each other, special effects ceremonies eg: candle lighting, ring blessing etc. where these involve children and family.

Q. Can couples include specific readings, rituals, or traditions in the ceremony?

A. Yes, happy to include readings, poems, blessings, rituals and traditions. As long as they are within the law.

Q. How do you work with couples to create vows that feel authentic to them?

A. I give couples the legal requirement which must be included in writing their vows then may be followed by adding their own ideas. I do have legal samples for them to choose from if they don’t want to write their own. If they write their own vows, I like them to email them to me separately so I can be sure they are suitable so they can keep them as a surprise for each other.

Q. Do you have any creative ideas or suggestions for making the ceremony feel unique and special?

A. Yes, plenty of samples and ideas like poems, readings, special effects ceremonies like Ring Blessing, Candle Lighting, Coloured Sand and many more. These are all symbolic of joining the two families into one.

Q. How do you work with other vendors (e.g., photographers, planners, musicians) to ensure everything runs smoothly?

A. I work well with other vendors as I feel I have a special part to play and so do they to make the couple’s day special. We work well together. When arriving, if I haven’t worked with them before we discuss the requirements of working together on that day to make their day special. For example – fade music when about to commence and I stand back so the photographer can get a clear shot of signing, kissing etc.

Q. How many meetings do you generally have with couples before the wedding day?

A. One or two meetings. We all live busy lives so if they have all of their original legal documents then one is usually enough. If still waiting for some of their documents, then a second is required to be able to complete the paperwork. All must be completed at least 14 days before the ceremony as this is a legal requirement. At the meeting we complete the paperwork and compose a ceremony.

Q. What is your process for handling legal paperwork and requirements?

A. I complete all legal documents from their original documents like birth certificates, ID like driver’s licences or passports, divorce or death certificates. At our meeting both sign and I am their witness. At the ceremony, the couple and their two witnesses and myself, sign a Presentation Certificate which I present to them at the conclusion of the ceremony. I then submit their signed documents to the Registrar of Births Deaths and Marriages RBDM for completion which must be submitted within 14 days of the ceremony. The RBDM then process them and advise me by email when it has been completed. I then advise them of the completion.

Q. How would you describe your style as a celebrant – calm, energetic, humorous, formal?

A. I am an organised, calm. relaxed helpful, formal and informal celebrant. I can be all of these as I have my couples organised in a nice way ahead of time so there is no stress on their special day.

Q. Do you have any recommendations or tips for preparing for a wedding ceremony?

A. I have lots of samples and suggestions with over 600 ceremonies experience. Ultimately it is their day so they can have what they want as long as it is within the law.
